National Livestock Bulletin notes a Virginia Maryland trend toward hothouse lamb production for Christmas and eastern markets. An Indiana buyer plans a 600 acre Virginia tract near railways for easy transport, claiming land is cheaper here and profits higher with less risk than in the Midwest. Abandoned farms east of the Alleghenies offer cheap entries of 32 to 5 dollars an acre, with good water supply and proximity to cities and rail lines, inviting investors to raise lambs for major cities.
