Fraud graphophone scam targets ranchers in Pocahontas District

D B Kretsner of Pocahontas District recounted how two men posing as graphophone agents sold machines for five dollars on a five month note. After collecting several notes, they vanished and letters from a Frank Black of Cornell Buffs demanded $165. A Pendleton attor ney named Sweet appeared asking for $155, but Kretsner refused and alerts spread that the scheme had prior coverage in the Baker City Democrat.

Graham for Congress from Baker County

Baker City Herald profiles James Harvey Graham, a Baker district mining man, announcing his candidacy for Congress from the Second district on the Democratic ticket. Born in Paola Kansas, he is 35, educated locally, admitted to Kansas bar in 1888, later moved to Cripple Creek Colorado where he led mining interests and chaired the Colorado senate committee for two years. Navigation hopes and hazards for Clearwater river barges

Reports by government engineers on Clearwater river navigation surprise residents from Kamiah to Lewiston. They find barge navigation problematic due to rapids and low water, risking logs, rafts, and even rowboats. Shipments back would worsen issues, and bridges, not barges, are needed to improve valley commerce. The piece argues Congress should declare the river unnavigable and enable bridge construction to replace ferries.

Sheepmen Gather to Discuss Umatilla County Road and Dipping Vats

A county woolgrowers meeting in this city on Saturday December 23 will address opening a public road from the southern part of the county toward Kamela or Meacham, building or leasing dipping vats, dipping sheep, and securing shipping pens with the O R & N for mountain shipments. Every sheepman is urged to attend to voice his views as these actions affect all. An earlier informal meeting planned preparations for spring, with the road through Starkey road near The Saddle long discussed. Snow fell about five inches in Grant County, stockmen expect to feed, and cattle in mountains are not feared. Monument Enterprise notes life expectancy figures, citing only about one in 100 reaching 65 with half dying before 16.
