Wheat Trade and Harvest Activity in Home County
Home County News reports a busy harvest scene around Athena with seven wheat warehouses totaling heavy capacity. By Aug 26 total wheat received reached 65,787 bushels, with 150,000 more soon to be shipped and daily receipts forecast at 10,000. Barley and corn stocks are modest, 6000 and 8500 bushels respectively, while harvest labor demand is high with wages from 2 to 5 dollars, board included. A recent wind storm damaged wheat fields near Athena, some yielding up to 45 bushels per acre, suggesting hogs may aid in handling downed grain.

Professional beggars in town claim to beg for subsistence
A man and woman calling themselves husband and wife stayed three days in town asking alms and even sought county aid to move on to Wallula. Known as professional beggars from Council Bluffs Iowa, they allegedly travel town to town, posing as a couple, and reportedly have a bank account back home. They stayed at lodging houses two nights and left owing part of their bills. Salvation Army provided shelter and aid the last night. Some travelers say they were seen in Salt Lake recently on a circuit to Pendleton. The woman refused work offered as a puree at 2.50 a day. They claim to have run a hotel before a fire burned it out.
