Roosevelt leaves New York for Utica on a lecture tour amid NY political muddle. He will address Herkimer county Grange on interdependence of conservation and rural life, urging better country conditions and farmer education.
New York reports Montgomery Gubbins of Omaha claims to have perfected a device that attaches to a woman's jaw and runs a sewing machine. The faster she talks the faster the machine runs, per his claim.
Pendleton mourns 16 year old Wayne Maloney son of Mr and Mrs James Maloney after a hay wagon wheel passed over his chest on a farm southeast of Pendleton. He died at 6 18 pm after being rushed to the house. Wayne born November 12 1894 in Athena moved to Pendleton in 1898. He attended public schools and was elected vice president of the freshman class at Pendleton High School. Funeral arrangements by Knights of Pythias with services at the house tomorrow at 2 pm conducted by President W H Bleakney of Pendleton Academy. Pallbearers will be fellow high school classmates.
News from Spokane reports improved fire conditions in Idaho and Washington though total deaths exceed a hundred. Wallace alone lists 32 dead with outlying areas uncertain. Refugees stream in from Montana and Idaho as bridges fail and rail lines stall. Taft Haughan Deborgia and Bryson towns lie in ruins.
Medford reports indicate all women and children in the fire zone have been moved to safety. More than 1,000 men are fighting fires in Crater National Reserve as five more troop companies arrived. Troops march toward Red Blanket range to curb a major blaze north of the Rogue River. 50 men and an infantry company head for Ashland to aid 200 volunteers. Ashland is believed saved as several fires still burn but overall conditions improve.
Governor Brady reports Idaho fires killing seventy at St Joe and leaving fifty missing as he orders General Howe to Coeur dAlene with state troops to aid. Fires rage across the mountains with death and devastation. Mullan is listed as safe.
Judge Stephen A. Lowell announces he will not seek the Republican nomination for Oregon governor. He urges supporters to concentrate on Grant B. Dimick to defeat Bowerman, arguing the anti assembly forces must back Dimick to keep Oregon on the new political path. He notes Bowerman as a “machine man” and warns a Bowerman win would entrench the old system.
Victor Marden, a famed Northwest ad man, predicts Pendleton Round-Up will surpass Cheyenne. He plans to attend Pendleton, offers to sponsor a saddle prize, handle advertising in The Dalles area, and asks about licenses and display rights during the three-day event. He proposes posting posters in prominent locations at his expense if paid for labor.
San Francisco August 23. Confederate pirate George B Wise testified before the coroner jury recounting the plan to wreck and plunder the steamer Buckman en route from Seattle to San Francisco. Captain Wood was murdered by Wise during the voyage and French West leaped into the sea. Wise awaits trial at Alameda County jail.
Washington expects Nicaragua to restore amicable ties as General Estrada reportedly informs the State Department he will swiftly repair for the execution of American engineers Grove and Cannon, shot on Zelaya orders. Insurgent victory welcomed by diplomats, seen as paving the way for restored diplomatic relations in Central America and restoration of order.
New York August 23 trotting fans will attend five days of racing in the grand circuit with 44500 in purses. The meeting aims to test whether high class racing can survive strict anti gambling laws under Governor Hughes. English breeder Louie Winans sends European trotters including Sir Martin and Allen Winter winner Leon and Willy among others. fears arise of foreign entrants winning the big purse.
The Pendleton board of water commissioners approves initial steps to secure a gravity water line from the Blue Mountains. Engineer F S Kelsay and party survey a line from Umatilla forks above Wenaha to Pendleton, securing right of way across the Umatilla Indian Reservation and private lands, with future extension planned as city grows.
Logansport Indiana August 23 The Indiana Golf Association opened its annual state tournament at the Logansport Country Club with a large entry list for the eleventh event A four man team championship over thirty six holes in medal play is on the program The qualifying round is set for tomorrow and the finals will be played Saturday
Aug 23 Atkinson reports Sheffield Ingall, a Mur dock ally, claims Murdock aims for the house speakership to succeed Cannon. Murdock is in Washington assisting Poindexter's bid for the senatorial nomination at the primaries.
