City council moves to pass an ordinance to raise the speed limit from 12 to 15 miles per hour and regulate driving positions and passing rules. It requires signs at all approaches, defines vehicles, and imposes fines from five to one hundred dollars or jail for violations.
Chief of Police Young of Adams Corner New York reports locating an automobile in a barn owned by John Rankin linked to Harry Thaw’s escape. Hazel Rankin identified Thaw’s image in the car as one of its occupants, traced to a Broadway garage and tied to Richard Butler former assemblyman.
Details from Manila describe Kerner Whitney, governor of Jolo, killed two Moros in a desperate hand to hand encounter during an inspection trip. Whitney sustained five bolo wounds but is reported to be recovering. he rushed to aid his interpreter and servant when attacked.
Mexican refugees arriving in Los Angeles predict widespread unrest in Lower California not limited to the border. Ensenada’s city council and secretary were ousted by a Huerta loyalist. Interior towns face harsher conditions as constitutionalists plan an advance into Mexicali to trigger uprisings elsewhere.
Eighteen were injured when a Venice on train left the track near Venice shortly after midnight. Many of the injured were Los Angeles newspaper workers returning to their beach homes after their nightly shifts. Five were taken to a hospital at Santa Monica. No deaths reported.
A 1913 letter from Sydney Clare, president of the Fits Gerald Trust Co. of Fitz Gerald Georgia, asks for live jack rabbits to be sent to his 10,000 acre Georgia game preserve. He promises to pay well and offers to exchange Georgia possums and coons in return, citing a Chicago report of rabbit damage in Umatilla County.
Acting Governor Glynn telegraphed Albany demanding the Thaw surrender to New York authorities. Canadian immigration officials replied surrender is impossible until the Sherbrooke Proceedings conclude.
In an old Raton tunnel collapse five men, FE. D. Stam sill and four Mexicans, were killed. Rescue efforts were under way to reach the victims and recover their bodies.
Chicago August 21 President Harry Selz of the Sele Schwab Shoe Company warned that shoe prices for consumers may double or even triple due to a cattle shortage. He said the cattle famine could be worse than the Mexican war scare, with reports from Kansas and other states indicating rising distress as heat intensifies and cattle losses mount.
Evelyn Nesbit Thaw, wife of Harry Thaw, declared in New York that her husband is dangerous and driven by egoism. She spoke while preparing to attend a matinee under guard, claiming he would kill her after learning of her success on stage and becoming independent.
The Pittsburg dispatch reports August 21 that Thaw at Sherbrooke asked Thaw family lawyers to obtain Governor Tenner’s help. He claims Pennsylvania citizenship and says he is the victim of a conspiracy. He insists Pennsylvania’s governor must protect him.
Calumet Michigan saw heavy rioting yesterday afternoon during a copper miner strike. Infantry and cavalry patrolled streets to prevent bloodshed after clashes between deputies and strikers. Deputy John Galveda suffered a serious scalp wound when struck. he fired into the air before civilians reached him. Troops arrived, more arrests followed, but trouble persisted.
In Los Angeles on August 27 an ammonia tank exploded at the Pacific Coast Reef and Provision company storage plant. One worker, Max Pinch, was buried under a brick wall and likely fatally injured. Three others, Fred Stenky, Michael Bernie, and Charles Thompson, were taken to a hospital with injuries.
POLA Austria Aug 21 three killed and five wounded including Admit Lanjus when a naval gun exploded during a test.
In San Francisco a warrant was issued for Mrs Charles D Lane widow of a mining magnate to appear in federal court after juror Bliss alleged she spoke with him about the Diggs case before verdict Bliss earlier said Mrs Caminetti was at her home and discussed mining stocks and the Diggs case Diggs was found guilty on four of six counts with a possible 24 year maximum and a $20000 fine or both The attorney Charles B Harris faced conspiracy charges in connection with suborning perjury and testimony at the Diggs trial set for August 2
The grand jury brought ten true bills and three not true today with several cases awaiting action. Indictments include Willis Jordan and Julia Walker for larceny of horses, W Dahlgleish for passing a bad check, Bud Stabler for forging N E Lee’s name, and John Hodsmith on sodomy. Also named are Dick Givens in a rape case, Charles Martin for spanking a child, and two more awaiting arrest, while Belle Olcott received a not true bill. Basil Parr and John Volfe were freed by not true bills.
San Francisco reports Caminetti says he is not frightened or discouraged by the Diggs cage outcome and Reno escapade arrest tied to Diggs conviction for ticket purchases. He contends the charge against him rests on persuasion and enticement in the indictment, not the alleged crime. His demeanor shows a drawn face that belies his words.
At Elk hart Chautauqua the opening day featured a chief lecture on America's Biggest Job. Dr. Euclid B. Rogers delivered the speech as an audience from about twenty states attended the program yesterday.
Attorney General Crawford arrived in Bandon to hear witnesses about the forcible deportation of Dr. B. K. Leach editor of a socialist publication. He is gathering I W W operations details and will report to Governor West before any action against Sheriff Gage. Crawford also collected testimony at Marshfield on Tuesday.
Charles Blick, 40, was killed and four other men were bruised when an automobile skidded and overturned between Dallas and Salem, Oregon, on August 21.
Washington officials say the Mexican stalemate continues with President Wilson firm in not recognizing Huerta while Huerta rejects mediation. A senate resolution proposes sending troops to act as a constabulary to protect Americans, not an act of war. Lind remains in Mexico City awaiting further orders as new peace messages are prepared for Congress.
Secretary Lane visited Idaho to review Payette Boise and Minidoka government projects. He spoke to settlers at Caldwell and Nampa, dined in Boise, and planned a Great Arrow Rock dam inspection before continuing to Minidoka to address settlers.
Bandits attacked the automobile of the king and queen of Roumania on the outskirts of Bucharest. The chauffeur sped the car forward, overturning several bandits. The king and queen escaped unharmed.
In Denver the Wild West and Far East show of Buffalo Bill and Pawnee Bill was ordered sold in piece lots to satisfy creditors by a United States district court. Gordon Lillie Pawnee Bill had sought transfer to New Jersey under receivership, but Judge Robert E. Lewis denied. The sale aimed to attract many bidders after the show was attached by a Chicago lithographing firm for a $64,000 debt.
