News from August reports heavy Japanese assault on Port Arthur with gunfire along the entire front, Russian forts under pressure, and claims of the fortress nearing fall. Messages describe the largest bombardment yet, with Russian reserves ordered to report and czar sending thanks to defenders.
The Willamette Valley Electric Company filed articles of incorporation with Secretary of State Dunbar. The group of J. F. Wilson M. F. Taft and M. J. Wileey list Eugene as the principal office and outline lines from Eugene to Portland Coos Bay Belknap Springs and Florence. Capital stock is set at 1 000 000.
Wheat market sparks record bids in Umatilla County with club at 70 cents and Bluestem at 75 cents. Over 90,000 bushels traded as prices climb beyond prior peaks, while E W McComas warns high costs may block exports and notes California demand for Bluestem. Chicago futures hit new highs as rains and rust fears ripple through the Northwest.
Chicago and Kansas City reports detail strikers asserting leverage over Packers as Mayor orders evacuation of stockyard housing for strike breakers. Violence erupts when a Lake Shore train carries strike breakers. an Hammond Packing Co officer is injured. Non-union workers suffer brutal mistreatment. lawyers consider injunctions to resist city action.
Howard F Haley an O R & N brakeman and Pendleton resident was fatally injured when struck by an engine during switching near Bluff Siding between Wallula and Walla Walla He died at Walla Walla hospital after his right leg was severed He had married Minerva Ginn recently and was 27 years old He belonged to the Odd Fellows and the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen and had taught school near Athena before joining the railroad.
M M Wyrick owns about 2200 acres east of Echo with winter blue stem wheat averaging 18 bushels per acre. Two headers and one combine cut the grain, threshed by a separator, machinery mainly owned by Wyrick. Sparks Bros own the combine. Barley and rye on 140 and 200 acres yield well, though some grain not yet threshed. Fewer wheat acres will be sown in the area this fall.
A Pendleton Steam Laundry wagon team driven by Smoky Nolf ran away on Main Street this morning. The horses bolted for two blocks before stopping at Carney's stable. Nolf had the reins but could not regain control. Nearby, Japanese forces have gathered hundreds of cattle around Port Arthur and driven them through the surrounding countryside to reveal mines along the roads.
B Owens of Tutuilla harvested 10 acres of wheat yielding 30 bushels per acre. The fall sowing area is expected to be similar. Owens reports fewer illnesses among workers than usual and none dead during the current harvest, despite hot weather. He has worked about 40 head most days since cutting began.
Pendleton sees faster real estate movement with buyers targeting residences and vacant lots this fall before school starts. Wade & Son report recent sales including E B Hoover acquiring 200 acres on the Uma Ulla river to E J Brotherington, Elvira McAfee selling 400 acres near Nye to Charlie Cunningham, T C Caleman purchase in Swhtsler's addition, W G Cole selling to E B Wade, and W R Frey residence on South Main sold to Frank Salling.
After a review of troops the Kaiser summoned senior officers and lectured on Far East war reasons. He harshly criticised Russia while praising the Japanese army’s organization. Senator Hoar reportedly alive in Worcester after a night with family nearby.
The O R and N company will run extra cars on No 6 for a railroad picnic leaving Pendleton mornings and returning the same day. About 600 attendees from La Grande and Elgin will aid the Railroad Men's Home fund with trap shooting baseball and an outdoor platform dance. Round trip is one dollar with ample seating as Pendleton sportsmen join Meacham events.
Portland August 20 local option activity grows ahead of November. A petition with 530 names seeks a county wide vote on prohibiting liquor sale for consumption by all. If the county votes no liquor, no liquor in any precinct, if yes some precincts may still lack liquor. Prohibition supporters expect many precincts to vote against sale while county support remains uncertain. Also updated R & N line work near Kahlotus Connell branch nearing completion. traffic to start soon.
T C Fell, mining near Circle City, Alaska, says the day of the individual miner is past as large companies gain control. He describes Alaska’s economy as leaning to agriculture in places, notes 900 miles north of Dawson and 75 miles north of Tannana, and reports on conditions, gear moves, and the value of Yakima sheep at about 25 to 26 dollars each.
Lewiston Aug 20 Percy Beeman aged 12 drowned yesterday while swimming with several younger boys at a river bathing hole about a mile south of the bridge in the Snake river.
A Umatilla chief John Wallette is charged with assault with a dangerous weapon after a farmer near Ut atilla and white man H. Jensen were involved in a quarrel. Wallette allegedly struck Jensen with a heavy rock injuring scalp and eye as they argued over an Indian at a Wilkins farm. A warrant was issued for Wallette.
William Wilson, a colored member of the Ninth cavalry, was discharged from custody in Walla Walla Aug 20 after being charged with criminal assault on Ibyearal Marie Marquis, a white girl. She identified him at first, but during cross examination he did not admit guilt and lack of evidence led to release.
Elegant Masonic Home Spokane reports Fred Phair contractor has closed the contract to erect the Masonite Temple superstructure at an estimated cost of 75000 dollars.
First National Bank reports two fraudulent checks drawn on its ledgers and cashed in Spokane. Checks for 16 and 10 dollars bear the names C F Baird and B B Hall, neither known in Pendleton. Assistant Cashier Hartman calls it a straightforward fraud exploiting blank checks during harvest season.
