A mob stormed Springfield Illinois injuring and killing, with a volley from soldiers at 4 am ending the riot. Two killed and a lynching occurred as 36 black-owned businesses burned and the town was patrolled by troops from Peoria Pekin and Decatur.
During a riot a negro was chased by whites toward candidate Chafin who raised a hand as if wielding a revolver and warned against harming him. A moment later Chafin was struck on the head by a brick as the crowd surged. Jo Tolay called a hero of the riot.
Chicago August 15 Democratic subcommittee chair Atwood said religion will shape the presidential race claiming Taft’s unitarian views alienate Christian voters while Bryan’s church devotion appeals to believers. Republican leaders have not commented as aides plan campaign literature and speaker itineraries.

Four masked men tried to rob a street car in Seattle early today. The motorman, seeing their masks, accelerated the vehicle and fled down the track while the assailants fired at the car.
Spokane authorities hunt for bandits who stole the mail car and engine from a Northern Pacific passenger train last night. The robbers uncoupled the mail car at Kent and fled toward Yardley, while officials search saloons and lodgings for the assailants. A man named John Snyder was arrested on a coach top for riding without evidence of involvement.
