Three Hundred Years Of Shipbuilding In Bath Maine
Bath and nearby towns celebrate the 300th anniversary of American shipbuilding with a Kennebec River carnival. The first American vessel, the Virginia, built at Popham in 1607, was about 60 feet and 40 tons. The shipyard era grew under Sir William Phipps at Woolwich, making Bath a central shipbuilding hub for 150 years, with over 1,000,000 tons recorded since 1783. Today much timber comes from outside Maine and yard activity has diminished, but Bath remains busy with a hopeful outlook.
