Fire destroyed seventy five wood frame houses, mostly homes of foreign workers in stockyards districts, after three hours of burning. Police say five Negroes responsible, seen fleeing. Other violence reported as workers return to daily routines amid lingering unrest.
Two brothers 19 and 15 left home in search of self support riding back from Meacham after walking 15 miles with no food. County road engineer Phelps gave them a ride into town. Their father had ordered the older boy to find work. sheriff Taylor returned them to La Grande where their parents were located.
The school repairs face curtailment as bidders failed to meet the requested amount for cement work and plumbing.
