New Rate Threatens Coast Lumber Industry and Railroads
The Pacific Coast Lumber Manufacturers' Association warns that new intercity rail rates may paralyze the coast lumber business starting October 1. Secretary Victor Beckman says the industry could lose about 165 million in payroll and force many dealers out of business. Replies from 30 of 18,000 dealers suggest huge declines in shipments, with Ohio and Iowa showing sharp cuts. Lawyers for the association plan to file with the Interstate Commerce Commission to block or delay the rate change before it takes effect.

Death Valley Notes by Miner Jack Gilbert
Jack Gilbert, veteran Idaho miner, returns to Nampa from Death Valley and reports brutal heat up to 120 degrees in the shade, miners earning three dollars a day with hard labor and scant comforts. He visited the Panamint range in Nevada copper country where many claims idle, noting Idaho as offering better prospects and milder conditions. He warns that one dollar in Idaho goes further than twenty dollars in Death Valley despite some prospects there.
