Auto road plan links Seattle to Portland via Puget Sound cities
Enthusiasts in Seattle and Tacoma push a campaign to improve the Chehalis to Vancouver and Chehalis to the Columbia River routes. They deem the Seattle to Chehalis segment satisfactory but the stretch to the Columbia River impassable in many spots. With about 660 cars in Seattle and many in Tacoma, they foresee Sunday trips to Portland once good roads exist. The drive will involve motorists and county authorities to elevate road work to a priority and secure early action.

Fire destroys 60 acres of barley on Reed Jonas ranch
Sparks from an R. R. locomotive started a blaze that wiped out 60 acres of barley at the Reed Jonas ranch. No insurance covered the crop and total loss is expected, with recovery sought from the railroad. Jonas also lost 10 acres in a similar fire about three weeks earlier, leaving only a black wasteland where the field once grew. An estimated 75 bushels per acre would have been typical. A separate note reports nine applicants for forest ranger positions in Pocatello last week.
