Advance Warehouse Charges Hit Lewiston Farmers
Farmers in Lewiston country face a 50 percent rise in warehouse charges, from 60 cents to 75 cents per ton until January 1, then 10 cents per ton per month. The move mirrors increases in Pendleton Walla Walla and Palouse regions as warehouse labor costs climb from $1.50 to $2.50 per day. Grain dealers say higher costs are necessary due to higher labor and general expense increases. Farmers plan countermeasures, including pooling the wheat crop and selling days under Inland Farmers' Association, which recently supplied sacks cheaper to members. Read the East Oregonian.
