In Umatilla county the McManus trial was adjourned to Monday after two jurors fell seriously ill. Juror Atherton, with kidney trouble, required a physician, and juror McRee suffers rheumatism. The court paused after 2 pm and will resume with closing arguments Monday morning.
Mrs. Kate L. Chester of Chicago, grand secretary of the Eastern Star, was killed in Peoria when she fell through an elevator shaft at the Mayer hotel this morning.
Pendleton headlines a home game against Walla Walla as the clubs contest their second schedule game. Manager Frailer confirms Antoine and Pender will compose the battery with Collins Graves Nelson Sheckley Drake Lieuwallen King in the field and Randolph possibly added. Grounds improvements include a score board and upgraded grandstand as Bert Carlton of Athena to umpire and M A. Rader as official scorer. game to start at 1 oclock.

Baltimore April 27 A new pier for Baltimore and Ohio railroad collapsed burying many workers in mud and wreckage. Estimates vary with 60 to 75 feared dead as divers and rescuers work to recover bodies. Identified dead include Howard L. Elender, civil engineer for McLean Construction.
In early morning masked assailants cut wires between Spencer and a western point then went to John Layman’s farm. They ordered him out, shot him twice when he resisted, and tied him to a tree before leaving. Layman was found and cared for by his family, though he died shortly after.
Washington reports that President Roosevelt may pardon January, a figure connected to the Tuam Janancy case. Janancy was remanded to Leavenworth penitentiary after escape, had lived quietly and married in Kansas City as Amoron Fti, with a pardon anticipated.
In White Plains on April 27 a decree granted Emma Eames Storey absolute divorce from Julian Storey. The court restored her maiden name and allowed her to marry. it forbids Storey from remarrying during his wife’s lifetime.

In Chicago on April 27 wheat opened at KOG-8 and closed at 80 percent, corn opened 498-4 and closed 60, oats opened 4h and closed 449-4, reflecting a mixed session for grains in the Chicago market.

Chicago April 27 Edwin Tate burglar and cell mate of N C Dougherty, the convicted superintendent of schools of Peoria, Illinois, was re arrested here this morning. Tate escaped from Peoria police where he was held on suspicion of blowing a safe belonging to the Peoria board of education and destroying papers necessary to the further indictment against Dougherty and possible conviction of Dougherty's associates.
Vienna reports Prof Moorhof, famed for introducing sodoform to surgery, died today by his own hand in the Danube. The death ends a personal crisis he faced publicly, with authorities confirming the incident in the river near Vienna.
J C McCoy of ROMA postpones the balloon launch set for tonight in St Louis due to unfavorable indications. Weather and wind conditions prompted the delay, with no new date announced yet.
Rev W E Potwine may be recalled to Pendleton if Bishop Rishon Scadding approves. The Church of the Redeemer will cable Potwine in Honolulu to return and lead as permanent rector after a 22 year tenure. Potwine, now superintendent at St Elizabeths House in Honolulu, previously led the church for about 29 years and helped it grow into a major Episcopal body in Oregon.

Mrs. W. Haywood, an invalid, escorted by a nurse and a guard from the Western Federation of Miners, left Denver with her two young daughters for Boise to attend the trial of her husband.
Four members of the ice trust pleaded guilty today in Cincinnati and were fined $100 each.
The Pendleton Presbytery convened in a large tent near the Tututilla Mission with Rev E T Allen chosen as moderator. Attendees include ministers B F Harper A J Adams W L Van Nuys Roy Hadley Levi Johnson and J M Cornelison along with elders E A Van Vranken W Axtell S K Yates and Philip Minthorn. The Indian camp meeting at Tututilla Church hosts about thirty Nez Perce visitors and over twenty conversions so far with many Umatillas and Whitman converts in attendance. The camp meeting will close Monday night.
The Tenson Hyde Dimond alleged theft conspiracy case has been postponed until October at the request of attorneys. Presidential party members are on an excursion down the James River today as heavy rain limits reporters access to the event.
In Washington a jury found Binger Hermann not guilty at 12:46 PM after being out since 2:30 yesterday. Prosecutor Heney says Hermann's acquittal will not affect his Portland land fraud trial. The case had added instructions this morning and Hermann welcomed the ruling as vindication of his honor.
O Pallon Missouri April 27 A Wabash railroad locomotive explosion killed three trainmen this morning.
The La Grande Observer reports that after a Cayuse wreck the damaged engine’s boiler remains in the Umatilla river for weeks. The wrecking crew left La Grande yesterday at 10 20 for another lift while railroad officials estimate damages will exceed 5000 dollars. The engine must be torn apart and rebuilt with many new fixtures.
About ten in the forenoon a fire broke out in the rear shed of Stroble’s second hand store on Court street. The shed held stoves and pipes and caused several hundred dollars in damage before local fire companies containment. The owner could not determine the cause.
