Late yesterday the grand jury brought in eight indictments. Four Pendleton and four Athena men face trial. Pendleton victualer Wis Cook is named among the Pendleton defendants. Other indictments target Athena near Keer Saloon proprietors. Plead not guilty.
In Beaumont Texas Judge Bryant ordered Federal Receiver Dorchester to hand all company property to State Receiver Harhart by April 21. The assets become liable for debts including a 1.6 million dollar fine. Once the fine is paid in Austin Waters-Pierce will be enjoined from business in the state and proceeds from selling property go to stockholders.
Indicted men Ole Olson and Albert Dendauw faced trial this afternoon with jurors being selected after noon. The remaining two indicttees were expected to be seated soon and trial to begin in earnest. prosecutors aim to show Gilliland obtained liquor at Tallman drug store where he works, rather than at the Queen chop house.
The grand jury returned indictments charging four men with local option liquor violations. Ole Oleson and cook Albert Dendauw of Pendleton faced arrest warrants with bonds set at 500 dollars. Athena proprietors Grant and Redfield, near Keenonloon, were also indicted. Oleson and Dendauw were surprised by warrants served by Deputy Bert Wilson. Oleson secured bond easily. Dendauw was aided by Abb Oee. Attorney J P Winter entered not guilty pleas and filed a demurrer claiming the law was repealed. The case involves evidence linking a miner buyer and Raymond Walker as witness. Remaining targets from Athena may yet be arrested. Grand jury work continues with more indictments anticipated and a final report possible tonight or tomorrow.
Reno report details a late night stud poker game that drained Joehn Haar mon’s fortune. Two bookkeepers tracked eight thousand dollars in one pot and twenty three hundred in another as the session stretched through the night, leaving Haar mon penniless.
O R N Detective Wood along with BE P Schuyler and Charles Dicketts pursued a depot theft link. A parcel containing two vests and mismatched trousers was traced to Sharon Hadings second hand store and now rests with the grand jury. Investigators expect to prove the clothing is part of plunder from the local freight depot during the thefts.
Mrs H W Mix arrives in Portland from Bangor with 2500 dollars and stays two days at the Imperial Hotel before vanishing. Her trunk is reported moved to two locations and a man named EB L Carroll is arrested for larceny in connection with the trunk. Mix is a director of the Commercial club and vice president of the Sentile Italian club.
Thirteen local business firms were swindled last Saturday afternoon by a mysterious man posing as a laborer named Cole. He passed checks signed by J. M. Rayburn and deposited money to the Farmers Savings Bank to front the scheme, with most checks for 15 dollars and two for 5 or 4 dollars. Police race to locate the culprit, who appeared to have a two day head start and may be the same person using the name C. S. Cols.
April 21 report claims Harriman H. E. Huntington and General Harrison Otis with B T Bari head a syndicate that bought Jans to block completion of the Owens River aqueduct. City attorney probes the affair as the Democratic League publicizes the charges.
Seattle April 21 Josiah Collins chairman of credentials and special events received a telegram from British ambassador Bryce acknowledging the invitation to open the exposition and promising a reply later J Z Smalling accepted the invitation to attend two events outlined in the opening program with a few exceptions
Chicago April 21 additional facts show the rival Hill and St Paul railroads intensifying a bitter territorial fight. The St Paul line surveys from Fargo toward Winnipeg and moves into Hills breadbasket in British Columbia and the Hed River valley, with several survey parties dispatched west.
In Little Rock on April 21 a fire destroyed five bales of cotton valued at 256000 and threatened the St Louis Compress plant, valued with contents at 100000. The blaze, driven by a sudden wind shift, burned about two hours before being checked. Fire may have started from a locomotive spark, according to superintendent W T Black. loss fully insured.
Portland, April 21. Strenuous objections are raised against the proposed harbor line to the Willamette river from opposite St Johns to Nigger Tom Island at the river mouth. Objectors want the harbor line but not a tentative line, mostly from east shore property owners tied to lumber interests planning saw mills and log ponds.
St Louis police chief said James Cabanne f., missing since last Thursday from his grandmother's home, had received a ransom letter for 10000. The Cabanne family confirmed receipt but offered little talk, and authorities doubt the letter's credibility.
San Antonio Texas April 21 State wide prohibition missed being a realty in Texas by an eyelash. The close margin leaves prohibition supporters elated and planning to push Texas dry within the next two years. Prohibition leaders who have visited state that liquor interests were frightened by the near success.
Grants Pass Oregon April 21 Gyvinte Pass will have a float at the Portland carnival parade. Arrangements were made by the commercial early Midien puxiliary with citizens contributing funds. The crowning feature will be a Josephine county queen designation. The queen has not been polented.
Nelson Allen and J F Morking, two stockmen in the Vincent country, returned home today after transacting business at the county meat.
Boise Idaho April 21 a settlement of the long standing trouble over the Mountain Home irrigation project is in sight. Settlers have organized an irrigation district under state law allowing landowners to build and operate works on a cooperative plan. The project began with Great Western Beet Sugar company promises but the works were never finished and settlers have endured three years of hardship on the desert.
Lena Adelsperger, newly married a month, killed herself with her husband’s revolver after he refused to kiss her. She left a note saying goodbye to her mother and forgiveness, then asked not to be asked for a kiss again. Her husband accompanied the body to Ludington, Michigan, her former home.
Chicago reports the remains of Prince a famed St Bernard were shipped to Seattle for burial after a solemn ceremony. The copper lined coffin held the dog owned by Francis Diaz a Seattle wine merchant who credited Prince with saving nine lives and earning blue ribbons. Veterinarians attended but could not save him.
Mombassa April 21. The steamer Admiral confirming ex President Roosevelt was sighted at noon and is expected to dock within an hour. Roosevelt will remain there until tomorrow when he will take up quarters at the ranch of Sir Alfred Pease at Athi River.

After complaints from Goble and points along the Northern Pacific between Portland and Goble the railroad commission takes up the matter of freight rates and announces a new schedule to replace the January 1, 1900 rates set by the Oregon company. The commission aims to balance charges with the boats for many youngt. express rates are being developed.
Pittepurky April 21 Motormen and conductors on the railways at this city today voted to strike this afternoon. The officers and their men's union conferred with railway officials and demanded either a new wage settlement or arbitration of the differences.

Tacoma bowlers under the name Lewis Brothers will participate in a telegraphic bowling meet on May 5. Each team plays three games and total pins are counted. Representing cities include Denver Salt Lake San Francisco Spokane Tacoma Seattle Portland and Vancouver B C.
