Four Pendleton Athena Men Indicted in Grand Jury Hits

Late yesterday the grand jury brought in eight indictments. Four Pendleton and four Athena men face trial. Pendleton victualer Wis Cook is named among the Pendleton defendants. Other indictments target Athena near Keer Saloon proprietors. Plead not guilty.

Ousted Texas Waters-Pierce Car Company Receivership

In Beaumont Texas Judge Bryant ordered Federal Receiver Dorchester to hand all company property to State Receiver Harhart by April 21. The assets become liable for debts including a 1.6 million dollar fine. Once the fine is paid in Austin Waters-Pierce will be enjoined from business in the state and proceeds from selling property go to stockholders.

Indicted Men on Trial Today Near Trial Start

Indicted men Ole Olson and Albert Dendauw faced trial this afternoon with jurors being selected after noon. The remaining two indicttees were expected to be seated soon and trial to begin in earnest. prosecutors aim to show Gilliland obtained liquor at Tallman drug store where he works, rather than at the Queen chop house.

Indictments for liquor selling handed by grand jury

The grand jury returned indictments charging four men with local option liquor violations. Ole Oleson and cook Albert Dendauw of Pendleton faced arrest warrants with bonds set at 500 dollars. Athena proprietors Grant and Redfield, near Keenonloon, were also indicted. Oleson and Dendauw were surprised by warrants served by Deputy Bert Wilson. Oleson secured bond easily. Dendauw was aided by Abb Oee. Attorney J P Winter entered not guilty pleas and filed a demurrer claiming the law was repealed. The case involves evidence linking a miner buyer and Raymond Walker as witness. Remaining targets from Athena may yet be arrested. Grand jury work continues with more indictments anticipated and a final report possible tonight or tomorrow.

Disappears in Portland After Arriving with Money

Mrs H W Mix arrives in Portland from Bangor with 2500 dollars and stays two days at the Imperial Hotel before vanishing. Her trunk is reported moved to two locations and a man named EB L Carroll is arrested for larceny in connection with the trunk. Mix is a director of the Commercial club and vice president of the Sentile Italian club.

Walla Walla Bank Fraud Uses Bogus Checks by Stranger Cole

Thirteen local business firms were swindled last Saturday afternoon by a mysterious man posing as a laborer named Cole. He passed checks signed by J. M. Rayburn and deposited money to the Farmers Savings Bank to front the scheme, with most checks for 15 dollars and two for 5 or 4 dollars. Police race to locate the culprit, who appeared to have a two day head start and may be the same person using the name C. S. Cols.

Lena Adelsperger, newly married a month, killed herself with her husband’s revolver after he refused to kiss her. She left a note saying goodbye to her mother and forgiveness, then asked not to be asked for a kiss again. Her husband accompanied the body to Ludington, Michigan, her former home.
