Washington April 17 The president may seek a Senate seat in 1908 as he retires from the current term. Friends say he intends to return to the presidency in 1912 via New York, despite strong opposition and a broad political move against him.
Kansas City April 17 The lower house of the new city council failed to elect a speaker after an all night session with 104 ballots cast by morning and a motion to adjourn voted down. Members were remaining at their desks for meals.
New York April 17 George W Perkins was arrested again today for alleged violation of the rules of the road while driving. The magistrate admonished him and secured a promise to refrain from conduct in the future. A policeman also claimed that Perkins abused him. Berlin April 17 report details a garrison mutiny at Tittle In with 915 soldiers killed and 665 wounded.
Scientists estimate damage to arable land from Vesuvius at 126 million dollars, deeming the figure a moderate estimate. In Petaluma California the Petaluma Tanning Company's plant was destroyed by fire, resulting in losses of about 100 thousand dollars.

The Yellow Kids of Athena will meet either Butte or Spokane league team on April 22 at Pendleton grounds after noon. If Butte fills vacancies, the league team will come. otherwise Spokane will face Athena. Large crowds expected from nearby towns. special train arrangements planned.
La Grande April 17 Work on the electric belt line around Grand Ronde valley is in progress with about three miles of grading between Hot Lake and Cove completed. Grading gangs extend four miles from Cove and expect to reach there in weeks. The line is graded at both ends toward La Grande, aiming to finish between La Grande and Cove by July 15 to serve the fruit crop. About 60 men and teams are employed, land prices rise, and 5 acre tracts near La Grande fetch $200 to $400 per acre as development accelerates.
Sacramento April 17 Charles Craig was found guilty of assault with a deadly weapon upon Officer Ryan and sentenced to two years at San Quentin. An appeal was taken. Craig and Charles Mack assaulted two policemen in a dive last Christmas and beat them with clubs. Mack is now in prison.
Manhattan Nev April 17 Walter Berteau slayer of Sheriff Tom Logan is undeniably insane. He imagines insects crawling over his body and is violent at times. He once struck his head against the bars until insensible.
Advices from Mali state a boiler explosion aboard the British battleship Prince of Wales resulted in two deaths and several injuries. The incident occurred as the ship was in service, with officials investigating the cause and extent of the damage.
The Commercial association plans a pre congress irrigation convention in Pendleton to unite arid Washington and Oregon delegates. Judge Stephen A. Lowel Prof L R Traver and Bert Huffman lead efforts to craft a northwest irrigation program for the national congress in September. Aimed at new irrigation laws, the meeting targets August 1 and the central inland city Pendleton as the gathering site with strong Northwest participation expected.
