Reported world War era clash sees American troops assist at Agua Prieta as rebels seize the town after a sharp engagement. Washington wires Douglas for position. casualties include 3 Americans and 20 federals, with hundreds wounded and fear of broader Mexican upheaval.
Governor Deenen departs Springflodd for Washington after a conference with chair of the senate investigative committee. Officials refuse to discuss the trip and its relation to the Lorimer matter remains unclear.
Washington April 14 Former Speaker Cannon announced his opposition to minority Leader Mann in the reciprocity debate to demonstrate he can mount a strong defense. Mann insists reciprocity should be supported. Cannon argues it subverts Republican principles. C A Herman merchant of Helix and East Oregonian correspondent visited. M H Reeves, noted insurance man, is in the city from Boise.
Fruit growers report mild damage from the recent cold snap around Milton and Freewater. H. D. Lamb says peaches and apples withstood the freeze, strawberries not yet damaged, some stems may nip later, and a few strawberry blooms were killed. Pendleton reports say apple blossoms were damaged at 18 degrees, but verification pending. Forecaster predicts a warmer spell tonight.
A powerful tornado swept the Miechpig valley causing multiple deaths and extensive damage. In Valley Mines Missouri four are dead, twenty five injured. Plummerfield Illinois three dead, thirteen injured. Row of mining towns reported homeles s and wrecked property. Postmaster Bunce rescued from debris near Valley Mines as a broader toll rises. Fifty injured in Flat River Missouri and surrounding mining towns with property losses exceeding one hundred thousand dollars. The storm was followed by a prolonged hail shower.
Boise April 14. Report says the widow of former Governor Stoernenberg visited the Tila ho penitentiary and forgave Harry Orchard, the dynamiter, for his crime. Orchard showed little emotion as the act was noted.
Dee Moines April 14 Adjutant General Logan orders the Des Moines militia to Muscatine to aid the sheriff during the button workers strike now three weeks old. Muscatine reports two militia companies from Davenport and Washington arrive as martial law is declared with many injuries and heavy property damage.
A University of Oregon study of last semester grades shows girls averaged 89.1 while boys averaged 83.3. Women’s clubs posted the top average with 42, the lowest among women’s groups was 46. The Masonic Fraternity and the Acacias led the men’s clubs with the highest averages, while the lowest men’s club average was 79.
Pendleton baseball squad adopts "Buckaroo" as official team name. Oregon and Washington Railway and Navigation support excursion rates for regional events. Roundup plans ceremony at the Athletic Millers grounds with christening and uniforms to be unveiled.
The Whe Reunday grandstand progresses with rapid construction led by Charles Cole. Cheyenne pictures thrill Round-up attendees as Fleishman showcases stage rights to Cheyenne wild west show films with Moorhouse attending as Round-up representative. Vernon rope tricks and cheers greet the crowd.
Washington news reports the resignation of Dr. David MIN as the United States ambassador to Germany announced at the White House. It notes President Taft considered sending Hill but asked him to stay, and that Hill may be relieved from duty by July 1 as Taft's term advances.
Pendleton officers move to stop rampant begging by transient vagrants. Acting Chief Kearney arrested three persistent panhandlers, one a cripple, who pressured passersby for alms and insulted refusals. Repeat offenders warned and ordered to leave town. patrols tightened to deter begging.
Frank W Bengon died this morning in Redlands California. Federal aid in roads building was the key issue at the April meeting of the American Automobile Association executive committee at its National headquarters New York. President Robert P Hooper led the session as the committee discussed highway improvement and the motorists role in intra and inter state road work.
The House debated campaign publicity and a reciprocity resolution amid Democratic denouncement of a senator’s charge against J P Morgan as a large contributor. A direct election of U S senators resolution passed the House 296 to 16, while Georgia proposes constitutional amendments to disfranchise Black voters. Massachusetts endorsed direct election resolutions 166 to 198, though the Senate has not yet acted.
Ben W Olcott of Crook county is rumored to be appointed by Governor West to fill the late PW Benson’s secretary of state vacancy. West indicated a Monday appointment. Benson’s funeral plans include a military escort. Benson, born in California, was an Oregon educator and statesman who became secretary of state in 1906 and governor in 1909. The note adds Benson’s death in Redlands California and a brief weather update from Hood River.
JAGK KEEFE is elected paid secretary of the Weston Commercial Club and will assume duties May 25. A Harvard graduate, he plans to quit the school field to boost club growth and organize a vigorous civic program with the board, aiming for an effective community business and social effort.
New York activists form the League for the Improvement of the Children's Comic Supplement to curb vulgarities and curb Sunday comics. Leaders Persival Chub Norman Hap e hums officers at Culliera Weekly and artist George De Forest Crush, with support from the American Federation for Child Study and the International Kindergarten Union.
