Drew and others. A defendant named Uehkwood pleaded guilty previously and was released on own recognizance. A new grand jury was selected but no indictments were found at this time.
Representative Hilbert of New York introduces a bill to create a department of aeropavition with a secretary holding nine cabinet portfolios. The measure goes to the house military committee, and Chairman Dent vows to appoint a subcommittee to consider the treasure.
Nearly 100 Pendleton men are already enlisted with more responding daily. Sergeant Frank Cornet of Co B Idaho National Guard reports 14 new recruits in town and notes the company is at capacity. Recruits continue from Pendleton to naval and army branches, with several Pendleton men enlisting in the yeoman and other coastal services. Local recruiting efforts show strong statewide enlistments as Oregon reports 167 enrollments, about three times California’s.
A large crowd of pacifists gathered near the Capitol to pressure lawmakers during the sixty-fifth Congress session. The protest aimed to influence national legislators on the issue of war as photographers captured the scene in the early moments of the gathering.
New York reports United States seized all Austrian ships in American ports after news of the breaking Austria America relations. A Red Cross fundraiser Wednesday features a grand march led by city groups including Boy Scouts Red Cross nurses Girls Honor Guard and Spanish War veterans. Sawyer orchestra provides music and dances cost five cents each with all invited to support the Red Cross.
Pendleton and La Grande high school boys guard bridges and tunnels along the main line of the O W R and N in the county. Seniors from La Grande and Pendleton students are sent to Campbell station and other sites to protect transportation against possible saboteurs. Guards are paid 24 cents an hour with shared government funding and provide their own food while living in tents.

The Farmers Union gathers for its annual meeting at Holdman on Saturday with speakers including W. L. Themipen of the highway commission and county leaders A. Teethamens and Barnhart. About 55 people expected, topics include road funding and telegraph line recommendations, with a 10:30 a.m. start and business agenda proceeding.
