Boston April 8 An ovation honored Dr Edward Everett Hale on his eightieth birthday with a public testimonial in Symphony Hall. Senator George F Hoar delivered the oration and Hale spoke in reply. The program featured readings by Harvard President Elliot and music by the Cecilia Orchestra Club.
Bloomington hosts the annual meeting drawing over 1500 teachers from across Indiana. Opening events include an invocation by Rev L F Plimmitt and welcomes from Mayor Hadley, W V Payne, and Rev Joseph Swain. D A Prosser responds. retiring president C N Peak and president J H Tomlin give addresses as sessions run through tomorrow.
The twentieth annual meeting of the Northern Indiana Teachers Association begins in South Bend with nearly 3,000 visiting teachers, the largest turnout. Mayor Colfax and John B. Stoll give welcomes. J. W. Carr of Anderson responds. J. W. Hamilton of Monticello, retiring president, reviews the work. A. H. Douglass of Logansport is inaugurated as the new president with an eloquent inaugural address.
In Pittsburg area on April 3 details emerged of extending the Van derbilt system to the Atlantic coast with a Newport News terminal. The Pittsburg and Lake Erie railroad would stretch from Brownsville through 140 miles to Staunton, connecting with the Chesapeake and Ohio at Staunton. The project would open new outlets for Connellsville coke and Pittsburg coal and supply an ore route for Cuman and South American ores.
Des Moines April 8 1902 the Iowa state legislature adjourned sine die marking a busy session noted for unusual activity and rapid lawmaking throughout.
W J Furnish will reach home Friday morning after leaving Portland this morning, stopping at The Dalles en route, with supporters set to meet him and extend congratulations on his gubernatorial nomination. The body of Cecil Rhodes lies in state at Parliament House as thousands pass to view the dead. The city is draped in mourning and Rhodes' funeral is planned as an imposing ceremony. The body will be carried tonight to Matopo hills per Rhodes's wish.
