W. J. Furnish born August 16 1862 in Randolph county Missouri. Spent most of life in Oregon moving from Idaho to Willamette valley then Pendleton where he attended schools and advanced through private academies. He worked as bookkeeper and wool merchant before serving as deputy US marshal 1889 and sheriff of Umatilla county 1890 1892. He led Pendleton as mayor from 1896 and repeatedly re elected. Was presidential elector in 1900 for Oregon Republicans. He headed Pendleton Savings Bank as cashier 1893 and later president 1899. Married with two children.
Philadelphia April 2 Eminent scientists from the States and Canada attend the American Philosophical Society meeting that opens today. The group, founded over 150 years ago, plans open discussion to promote its objects, expanding beyond papers to interactive debate among scholars in various fields.
