Direction of Corn Rows Affects Forage Growth
Iowa State College agronomists report forage establishment improves when planted between north south 80 inch corn rows compared with east west spacing. Shade from sun exposure largely drives the effect, with poorer forage stands on the south side of east west rows. The difference fades with 40 inch rows due to greater shade from the closer spacing.
