Fill and Seed Gullies to Make Good Waterways
Ted Willrich, Iowa State College extension agricultural engineer, urges farmers to fill and seed gullies to protect cropland. He notes gullies deepen and erode land, posing hazards to machinery and reducing farm value, and recommends using a bulldozer or farm equipment to reshape gullies. Five steps begin with clearing trees and trash before covering with compacted soil to stabilize fills.

Reestablishing a Waterway After Gully Shaping
The process describes restarting washing, bulldozing topsoil from gully edges, saving soil for resurfacing, filling the gully with well compacted soil, and shaping the waterway to a saucer profile. If the bottom is V shaped or too narrow, gullying may resume. Topsoil is spread evenly after grading, followed by agronomic steps on fertilizer and seedbed management.
