A lawn free of dandelions requires a thrifty compact sod and fertile soil. Unfertile soil, heat, shade, or reflected heat allow dandelion seeds to establish from windblown fruits. Nitrogen is key, with ammonium sulfate as a cheap source. phosphorus and potassium may be needed. Acid soils respond to superphosphate and liming. Organic fertilizers work but may be costly.
