Clipping Clover Boosts Yields and Winter Hardiness
County Agent L. J. Nickle urges clipping Sept 15 for spring seeded red clover to raise hay and seed production by 10 to 20 percent next year. Illinois trials show second year hay up 20 percent and seed 25 percent, with some years 50 percent. Early clipping improves winter survival and reduces field mice, with heavy pasture possible for 10 days if mowing is inconvenient. Indianola Tribune.

Expect Feeding of Hogs to Pay This Fall and Winter
Marketing corn as pork remains profitable for Iowa farmers in 1938-39, despite hog prices expected to dip below last year. Hog prices are down from a year ago, but the corn hog ratio stays favorable around 20 to 1 and unlikely to drop below 12 to 1. Hog marketings should rise this fall, though total hogs marketed may be only modestly higher after unusually heavy summer sales.
