His brother-in-law James Lathrop found the body after checking a lantern left burning during Morton’s morning chores. Health officials attributed the tragedy to self-inflicted action.

Body of Man Found on Railroad Tracks Near Prairie City
The section crew found a mangled man’s body about a mile west of Prairie City on Thursday morning. Names were in his shoes and sweater in Spanish or Italian, fingerprints on one hand offered possible ID, age about thirty five. He likely fell beneath a train while riding the rods Wednesday night as trains passed both ways due to a stoppage, with the body buried at Waveland cemetery Saturday afternoon. Investigators doubt death occurred at the time of being run over. three men in sweaters were seen nearby Wednesday morning, but fingerprints did not match those on file with the State Bureau.

Fire of undetermined origin damaged three Indianola stores and the American Legion rooms on the east side of the square Monday night about 8 30. The blaze, which threatened to become much more serious, was soon checked.
