In August 1976 Argentina under President Videla banned the activity of Jehovahs Witnesses nationwide, closing branch offices and forbidding Bible publishing. The Monroe congregation expresses surprise, cites prior growth from 1,416 to 31,140 members since 1950, and hopes liberty is restored. Jacob Neef Jr. presiding overseer of Monroe Congregation comments on the decree and calls for freedom of worship.
The American House built about 1870 offered guests a family atmosphere. Frequent traveler Mr Jennings enjoyed meals with chicken and dumplings, soup first, then roast beef or chicken, sides like potatoes and creamed vegetables, three pies or pudding, and supper with beef steak and pork chops. Traveling men relaxed in large armchairs on summer evenings.
An historic reminiscence recalls waitresses at the Hotel Pella handling meals at 60 cents each and aiding in service. Sundays brought large crowds of guests including college people, with Missis overseeing the dining and occasionally waiting tables. Banquets for college societies featured elaborate table settings and English violets on white damask.
UNICEF outreach in Pella calls for Trick or Treaters from grades 1.5 in local schools to collect coins and dollars Friday afternoon. Afterward the cartons go to the Holland Theatre for a movie party Saturday Oct 30 from 6 to 8 pm sponsored by the Pella Lions and American Legion. Contributions total $688.61 to Mary Kuyper. cards and calendars sold by Mrs. Allen Moen and at Kuyper Gym Christmas Bazaar.
