Native Wood On the Farm for Building and Repair
Iowa farmers can save money by using wood from their own woodlot for storage structures and repairs. Extension forester Richard Campbell says home-cut town woods rival commercial lumber when properly used, with red and white oak, ash, walnut, red elm, and hard maple suitable for joists and girders, and soft maples or basswood good for roofboard and sheathing. White oak and black walnut are best for sills and may also be used for portable building flooring. town woods are not advised for exterior siding.
