Feed Program Built on Damaged Corn for Winter Stock
Iowa State College expert Richard McWilliams says damaged corn can support a winter feeding plan for yearling feeder steers. A 196 day trial used a 0.8 pound daily supplement blend with 15.9 pounds cornstalk silage, 2.5 pounds ground corn cobs, 3.8 pounds ground shelled corn, 1.4 pounds alfalfa hay, and 0.1 pound mineral mix and salt.

Fall Borers Infestation Highest Since Early 1950s in Iowa
Iowa cornfields show the third highest fall infestation of European corn borers on record from a survey by Iowa State College and state federal entomologists. Iowa averages 849 borers per 100 plants with 93 percent infested, strongest in eastern and southeastern districts. Findings cover 12 districts with per plant borers and infestation percentages. Dry weather did not curb borers. season not as bad as feared, though harvest showed more damaged ears and broken stalks. Future impact hinges on spring survival and weather.

Winter feeding starts earlier for Iowa dairies
Late summer pasture shortages push Iowa dairymen to stock up on forage and concentrates earlier than usual. Ex extension dairyman Donald Voelker of Iowa State College warns farmers to inventory winter feeds and plan for the herd. High producers may require about 20 bushels of corn, 26 of oats, 350 pounds of protein, plus two tons of hay and three tons of silage per year, with variations for lower producers.
