Liberal Mulch Protects Strawberries in Iowa Winters

horticulturist Russell Eggert of Iowa State College advises liberal mulch to safeguard strawberry beds from winter hazards. Any coarse hay or straw works, leaves if wind-protected but applied thinly to avoid smothering. A settled depth of about ½ inch suffices. mulch after two hard frosts to prevent premature growth. When abundant, straw should cover beds about 3 inches deep, around 2 tons per acre. If mulch is scarce, spread it over rows to maintain depth rather than cover entire area. Ensure good drainage to prevent heaving, and consider fall cover crops for added protection.
