Tulip Festival Seeks City Tulips Through Cooperation
Tulip Time supporters warn visitors are dwindling and urge strong cooperation between Tulip Lane property owners and the city. The council plans a full planting and cultivation program, noting higher initial costs and the need for household participation to sustain a beautification effort.

Galesburg Go-Getters Hold October Family Night
The Galesburg Go-Getters 4-H club met October 12 at the Grange Hall with 29 members leaders and parents. 4 H Halloween Party Planned in Marion County
4 H members in Marion County aged high school and older will hold a Halloween Party at the barn in the County Park west of Knoxville this Saturday night October 21. A Sister 4 H Club foreign country planning activity is planned with dancing refreshments and a 7 30 p.m. start. Costumes or masks are required.

The Oct. 14 Richland Blue Belles meeting at Bonnlie Butler’s home had five members two leaders and one guest. Janice De Geus opened the meeting and the group set Nov. 11 for the next gathering while discussing the 4-H banquet. Security Bank Closed Sparks Local Banking Crisis
The Se curity State Bank in Pella shut its doors Saturday afternoon after a rush of depositors and widespread fear, despite officers asserting solvency. Attorney T H Klein outlined the bank’s status, prospects for depositor repayment, and that liquidation could take up to a year as stockholders may face double liability and the State Banking Department takes over.

Several Pella servicemen returned on leave this week including Philip Bevan from Camp Claiborne Louisiana and LeRoy Van Arkel who joined the Atlantic sailing route. Arnold Bogaards and Clarence Van Essen were home from Camp Leonard Wood Missouri. John Du Pree, discharged at Camp Polk Louisiana, visited his mother Oct 16 before returning to Chicago. William Nibbelink arrived from Camp Claiborne for a furlough. A national campaign to conserve waste paper for defense began in Pella with requests to households schools and businesses to donate. Wayne Schakel of Ideal Pharmacy spent three days at Fort Madison learning sales and service of Schäffer pens. Gary and Ben Vogelaar erected a new steel fence around Central's athletic field.

Home Wrecked by Fire at 1108 Broadway
Ten years ago, a fierce fire gutted the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Hoksbergen at 1108 Broadway on October 15. An oil stove explosion sent burning oil through the room as smoke blanketed the house. Firefighters battled the blaze with heavy water, aided by neighbors who tried to douse flames with a garden hose. Only a few furnishings were saved as the fire spread rapidly.

Area Veterinarians Meet in Pella
Marion County Veterinary Medical Association held its bi monthly meeting at the Coffee Shop in Pella last week Tuesday evening. Guest speaker Dr Noordsey from Kansas State University spoke on rabies and presented film case histories. Attendees included Dr Noordsey and numerous local veterinarians and students from KS A, with members from Indianola Knoxville Pleasantville and Pella among the group.
