Chester Zylstra, a PHO MATE 1/c photographer aboard the carrier Lexington, spends days and nights in the air and laboratory documenting Japanese activity on Honshu. His 21 months overseas service, previous work in The Chronicle engraving department, and local Iowa roots in Pella tie him to this wartime effort.
First Lieutenant W Vriezelaar son of Mr and Mrs John Jd Buwalda of a towa and husband of Mary Louie Renaud received his honorable discharge from the Army Air Forces at Romulus Field Michigan today after enlisting March 1942 He served 10 months overseas and earned 50 discharge points He holds the Distinguished Flying Cross the air medal with one clasp and the Asiatic Pacific Theater ribbon with stars.
Cpl Arnold Bogaard of 100 Independence Street Pella Iowa was honorably discharged at Camp Fannin Texas on October 4 1945. He enlisted September 9 trained at Fort Wood Missouri and served at Fort Lewis Washington. overseas two and a half years with the 54th Engineers in the Pacific theater. He is the son of Mr and Mrs D Bogaard of 400 Independence Street Pella Iowa.
Sgt Newton P Van Maren Jr of Mason City Iowa son of Mr and Mrs Paul Van Maren was commended by Brig Gen William H Tunner for his work as a crew chief on C 46 commandos aiding the India China division over the Himalayas. After 26 months in Assam he is scheduled to return home and receive an extended furlough before discharge. He previously worked as a bookkeeper before enlisting and training as an aircraft mechanic.
Postwar flying plans gain momentum as towns without air facilities plan airparks. Civil Aeronautics Administration and state aviation bodies offer diagrams and site guidance while national groups aid communities through the Early postwar era.
Sgt Van Maren arrived in Assam on July 29 1943 as the hump airlift began. He helped shape the development of the massive aerial supply route linking India and China during World War II.
An urgent drive by the Veterans Health facility in Knoxville seeks 128 Hospital Attendants and 12 Mess Attendants. Civil Service rules limit eligibility to veterans. others who qualify may apply.
