A fragmentary rural column reports on community life including sorghum concerns and local visits. Names such as Mrs and Mr Spent Sunday at Cransion appear among scattered references, with a brief mention of visits to Floyd Garner and John Young ladies.
The Taintor S. GT. Club met with Mrs Clevenger Thursday afternoon to mock old school days in period costumes. Mrs Heitsman won the grand prize for comical look. Guests included teachers and a superintendent. Refreshments featured school box lunch style sandwiches cookies and bananas. Various local residents and families were noted visiting or hosting events around Otley Pella Union Mills and nearby towns. The Rebecca Lodge met at Tainter Hall with socializing and prizes. Rev Hebron preached at the Lacey church and officers for the coming year were elected including Supt John De Jong Assistant Supt David Longaker Treasurer Erlyne Northcutt Pianist Viola De Jong Chorister Earl
Leighton residents host and visit across town with numerous gatherings. Neighbors attend birthdays, showers, and church events at the Christian Reformed church, Black Oak and Scott Center schools, and the De Jong home. Described are hospital visits, family dinners, township meetings, and a large catechetical class with 30 children and refreshments.
Des Moines visitors Sally and Ike Howard and son Robert visited Friday. Miss Hester Ellis and others planned to attend the Town Illinois football game in Chicago Saturday. A Ladies Aid chicken dinner at the Community church featured an aluminum demonstration on waterless cooking and cake baking.
Janet Gaynor and Lew Ayres reunite for Fox Film Servants Entrance coming to the Rivola Oskaloosa on Saturday October 13. Gaynor plays a rich society girl craving new experiences while Ayres is a young inventor turned chauffeur. The comedy romance pairs a witty performance with a strong supporting cast.
Galesburg and nearby residents share a week of visits and gatherings. The Woods and Schnugs hosted supper guests at the Terpstra home. Dorothy Terpstra returned with the Wood family. Ed Dearinger visited Minnesota relatives. Several men worked in Hollandale, Minnesota. Margret Schnug entertained visitors from Long Beach and Chicago. Lester Hendricks visited his brother William. Jessie Carpenter family visited Des Moines. A Galesburg couple welcomed a 11 pound son, their second child. Various local families hosted and visited friends and relatives in midweek gatherings.
Peoria Mr and Mrs Gerrit Vander Molen are the parents of a baby boy born Monday October 8 The visit of Mrs B Buikema of Chicago to the J Weidenaar family is noted Herman Bokhoven and family visited the Mrs Martin Vander Molen residence on Wednesday evening Several relatives arrived home Friday after a Hollandale trip lasting five and a half weeks Mr and Mrs Henry Stuursma and son Theodore visited Saturday afternoon Mrs Cecil Vander Molen spent Tuesday with her sister Mrs Bert Swank Cornelius Boeren fijn and wife visited Sunday evening with Mr and Mrs Bert Roose.
Alva Dye, 47, of seven miles northwest of here, is held in Keokuk County jail awaiting grand jury on an assault with intent to commit murder charge against his wife. Dye waived to the grand jury after a preliminary hearing last week. He allegedly choked his wife and fled. Dye recently moved from Barnes City. Also bound over was Nye of Delta on charges including driving without a license, drunken driving, and illegal liquor possession as the grand jury prepares to meet.
The Sigourney Review notes the grand jury will consider the case of Fred Jewell charged with kidnapping Nick and FE D. Son, expected to draw the most interest among the old cases presented in court.
Turner assailed the current administration’s tax policy and budget in a public talk. He argued sales tax shifts funds, claimed possible $8 million departmental cuts, and criticized property assessments. Turner urged moral suasion with the state board and cited past treasuries, slamming relief politics and federal aid as inadequate.
