Fire Strikes What Cheer Homes and Barns Twice This Week
Fire crews battled a grass fire that destroyed Mrs. Strasser’s southeast What Cheer home and a haystack on Tuesday. On Wednesday a barn and haystack at Bill Smith’s property were set ablaze, with chemicals used to prevent spread. An eastbound closed car crash near Primary No. 2 injured four, including Dick Michmershiuzen and Howard Cosby. both cars were uninsured and badly damaged.

Horse Killed by Automobile Near Knoxville
Fred Kading’s wagon struck by a Ford coach driven by N L Brees near the S J Marsh home four miles west of Knoxville last Friday evening about 8. The collision killed one horse and badly injured the other after they were hauled with a corn load to town. Passengers in the car escaped with bruises. the auto was wrecked.

Calf Cause Sues Over Bridge Crash Fatality
Knoxville Express reports administrator Guy Hols filed suit in Mahaska county District Court seeking 25000 in damages from Herman Schultz and T Carl Schultz for the July 14 1929 automobile accident that killed Stanley Catlin. The petition states a calf belonging to the defendants darted into the car near a bridge causing it to plunge into a creek. Catlin a passenger suffered a broken arm and other injuries. Catlin was brother to Ed Catlin found dead in his car near Colfax last February.

Grief Aplenty For Sigourney Family
Theodore Ray son of Mr and Mrs W C Ray died at University hospital Iowa City last Monday November 10 after an appendicitis operation. He was 18 years 1 month. Funeral services are today at 2 30 PM from the Methodist Episcopal church conducted by Rev E J Shook with burial in West cemetery.

Local High School Grad Remembered After Tragic Loss

Hedrick Man Hurt In Freight Collision Near Hedrick
Highland Center Jim Burrier of Hedrick suffered serious injuries when his truck was struck by a Milwaukee passenger train just south of Hedrick after 4 PM. Witnesses say Burrier failed to notice the oncoming north bound locomotive. He was crushed and transported to St. Joseph hospital in Ottumwa where doctors reported his condition as satisfactory and expected to recover.

Sigourney Review reports Leonard Zahn county agent and Leo Rettler planned to travel by plane with Pilot Peiffer of Keota to Shenandoah for a husking contest. A gasket or bearing failure forced a landing before reaching Oskaloosa, though Peiffer managed a forced landing on this side of town.

Lass Thumb Loss After Pony Incident Near Knoxville
A Tennessee boy, the T-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Will Murphy, lost his left thumb in a peculiar accident north of Knoxville. Riding his pony to school, the animal pulled back while tying at a post, catching the thumb in the knot and severing it at the first joint. The injured lad was taken to Mercy hospital in Des Moines for treatment, with the hand and arm greatly swollen.

Sudden Death of New Sharon Grocer George Leech
Funeral services for George Carl Leech, noted New Sharon grocer, were held Wednesday at the Christian church with Rev. A. B. Cornell officiating. Born May 4, 1877, in Union County, Iowa, he died November 8, 1930 at his New Sharon home at age 53 years, 6 months and 4 days. He married Lucile York January 26, 1908, and lived near Cres ton before moving to New Sharon in 1914 where he owned a store, later worked as a traveling salesman, and then served as clerk for Mr. Phelps and six years with Whiteacre Way Gunderson. Pallbearers were A. J. Way, John Jansen, Osmond Gunderson, Paul Baker, Harmon Trager and Charles Ladd. He was respected for his good nature and character.
