A citywide power plant test will light 204 electric globes to replace two months of darkness. M M Humphrey says the $20 000 municipal plant is ready for a practical demonstration after water mains are finished. Public tours will be offered of one of the state’s best municipal power systems.
The city sold the old band stand to H Lubbers for 15.50 plus moving costs. Lubbers, the sole bidder, planned to use it on his dairy farm west of town. A later offer of 30 was declined. Dr W F Crew and Miss Juey King wed secretly for three weeks. Will Brunia closed a River Ridge school term with a large picnic and planned to attend Cedar Falls State Teachers College. Van Maren, among Pella’s first settlers since 1847, marked 86 with cigars for friends as remarks. Twenty four Pella High graduates listed including Ethel Bloem and Mary Bruins. Sybenga’s Bakery advertised empty flour sacks for sale at five cents each.
The May 28 1931 city council order requires all gasoline pumps on city property at Pella stations to be removed by July 1. Petitions claim some operators face tax and business issues on private property while others use city property cheaply. A. A. Roorda sells ground to Jack Scholtz for 1300. Scholtz plans a West End Cafe and service station with W. G. Neeley & Son managing two Standard Oil stations. Oscar Benson renovates the local theatre for a grand reopening. Iowa drivers must carry a license starting January 1 1932 after Gov Dan Turner signs the bill.
May 26 1941 report lists 41 graduates of Pella High School class of 1941 who were slated to receive their diplomas. The article names students and notes details of the graduation program and awards presented at the time.
A list of names from Pella residents is followed by reports of trips to the Tulip Festival in Orange City. G. A. misplaced a purse in Sioux County, while five Pella businessmen visited the festival and noted Sioux County’s celebration differed from Pella’s Tulip Time as flowers suffered from hail and heat. Corporal Gerald Van der Leest returned to Camp Bowie, Texas, after visiting his parents.
Ten years ago Army called three Pella men for two years service Howard Jaarsma William Stursma and Galen Dykhuis volunteered and joined Marion county draft. JAKE B. DAHM bid on grading for the Pella Knoxville road rebuild from Stoops Corner to Des Moines River bridge. Central College summer session announced courses June 11 to August 3. MOVE sought rural fire protection with a rural fire truck. Ralph De Cook named committee chair. Wilma Keuning and Lou Ann LeCook won National Foundation Union Award at Pella High. Gerald De Wyk planned to settle in Pella for tailoring service.
Multiple church notices list morning worship at 9:30 am with varied sermon titles such as Strange Ways Healing and Hurting in the Church Christians Givers not Getters and Poor in Spirit. Also notes Sunday School catechism classes adult classes and evening services across several corners including Second East First Street Calvary First Baptist Reform and Protestant churches with guest preachers and youth programs.
Mr and Mrs W E Behrends of Buffalo Center recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. The notes also mention Cocoa containing theobromine, a substance related to caffeine, and include church activities at Open Bible and Roman Catholic corners with services and study sessions listed throughout the week.
Mra Marvin Van Loon of Bussey was hospitalized in Knoxville Sunday with hip and back injuries while Ernest Sasris of Dallas sustained head and chest injuries after a gravel road collision south of Knoxville. Van Loon and Sasris, both 58, drove a 1955 Chevrolet and a pickup respectively. Sheriff Loren Jraman cited about $0 damage to Sasris’ vehicle and total loss to Van Loon’s car. Dan Reeser rode with Sasris.
