The Man Who Cut All the Stone for Central College
Frederick C. Mathes, born in Capelle Germany in 1835, came to Pella in 1854 to carve stone for Central University. He and his brothers established a stone shop, supplied stone for many buildings including the courthouse at Knoxville, and built a life around farming, milling, and beekeeping, shaping Pella’s early development before dying at 60 after a long illness likely from stone dust.
