Steamers Once Popular Cars in Early 1900s America
In the early 1900s there were about 125 steam car makes led by Stanley White and Locomobile. Steam cars were quiet powerful and fast with records like Stanley’s 127.66 mph on a Florida beach in 1906. Teddy Roosevelt drove a White steamer and steam cars later faded as gasoline engines rose. The Doble firm kept steam production into 1925 with a 119 hp engine and a boiler able to reach 710 psi, boasting speeds over 95 mph. Many late steam models remain in use today.
