Late Planting of Corn Doesn t Pay
A farmer faces trade offs when adjusting planting dates to combat corn borers. Sprague and Lilly of the Town Agricultural Experiment Station advise planting around the same time as in the past for best yields and least damage. Delayed plantings reduce yield and may not reduce borer impact. first-brood timing matters, with May 7 planting yielding 79.5 bushels per acre versus later dates. Late planting increases second-brood damage and further lowers yields.
