A car speeding in dense fog passed a patrol vehicle at 80 mph. Two nights later the same driver, returning downhill, swerved through a narrow bridge, crashed, and was found to be the earlier offender. The driver, unadvised, died at the scene.
Des Moines officials confirm a Memorial Day motor speed classic to be held at the Iowa State Fair oval on May 30. Seven events cover nearly 100 laps with Indianapolis engine rules guiding. Notable entries expected include Frankie Luptow Deb Snyder Bobby Grim Bert Hellmuetler and Luptow on the new 1950 Offenhauser.
The Knoxville Journal reports a tentative plan to plat and annex an addition north of the current city limits. The index of prices received by Iowa farmers rose three points in April to 258, the highest since October’s 262. The low point since the war was 289 percent of 1910-14 prices in December. The ratio of prices received to prices paid moved up to 1.96. Gains stem mainly from grains with Iowa corn prices up eight points. livestock and products mixed as milk and poultry fell, beef rose. hog prices fluctuated but were slightly lower midmonth.
W. E. Wilson of Malvern marked his 88th birthday. He has lived his entire life in Mills County and is among the oldest readers of the Malvern Leader, reading his first paper 75 years ago.
