Tornado Safety Guidance for Rural and Urban Areas
Advice for facing tornadoes emphasizes moving at right angles to the path in open country, taking shelter in substantial buildings away from windows, and using basements in the southwest corner. If no basement, lie on the first floor under a table or bed, preferably in the southwest corner. Urban schools should stay indoors away from windows near an interior wall on a lower floor. Rural teachers should lead children to a ravine or ditch if shelter is unavailable.
