The Chronicle tour visits J P Durham on the Oxville road and Virgil Matthews on a nearby farm. Durham, born on the Iola school site, recalls hard times and farm debt while Matthews notes a sow with 32 pigs and a reliable radio bought from Chronicle contests. Ver Steeg family recently moved to a 140 acre Visser farm and plans spring work.
Southeast Iowa town notes a five percent salary reduction for teachers earning over 1200, with Supt Hoyman voluntarily cutting his pay. G W Newsome named board president as the Indianola school board outlines a 1700 total reduction, about two mills. Grade teachers face a 945 maximum, with cert duties affecting one case. Daugherty sentence and parole violation noted. Floris residents mentioned.
A house on the William Malloy farm southwest of Lovilia was destroyed by fire in the early hours, with William Malloy Jr waking the Flahive family who had been staying there. A small amount of furniture was saved, and insurance covered most losses. the Flahives planned to move in on Tuesday due to a storm delaying their departure. The Flahive family had been living on the Malloy farm previously and will farm Mary Flahive Estate land this year, while Malloy and the McGinns planned to occupy the vacated house and farm Malloy’s place.
Rost Daugherty a 37 year old Davis County farmer serving a 15 year forgery sentence at Fort Madison penitentiary died by his own action in his prison cell last Sunday afternoon. Deputies found him about 2 o clock with a towel around his neck. Prison authorities believe he faded life by strangulation into the towel.
W. M. Vanderwall of Des Moines, a young farm inspector for Yeoman Insurance, was badly hurt when two Perry Packing Co. meat trucks, one towed by the other, swerved on No 60 near Lybee’s corner and struck him as he was placing chains on his Packard. He suffered a broken leg with bone exposed and other injuries. condition reported serious. Driver Layton Russell led the head truck. both drivers were from Pella. Continuous high speed claimed for the tonnage, though Vanderwall was still on the highway.
Keokuk County News reports Dr. C. L. Heald, a Sigourney physician, lost control on road two near Keota. His car overturned twice in a ditch, doors jammed, and he waited for help. The baby arrived in Sigourney before he could be examined, with steering parts found disconnected after striking an obstacle earlier that day.
McDonald Dickson, 48, of Newton, was found dead in his back room over the Karns Cafe on North Second Avenue west about 7:00 Tuesday morning. Coroner James J. Engle ruled the death a heart attack brought on by excessive alcohol use. Dickson was found by Karns Cafe owner A. T. Karns after Dickson complained of illness the previous day.
Coroner reports finding Mr. Dickson with his left hand raised to his throat. He leaves a son, John Dickson of Newton, and his divorced wife, Mrs. Josephine Dickson of Newton. Born in Ohio, he spent most of his life in Newton and was employed as a cook.
A large barn on the Wilfred Reese farm near Hayden Chapel burned Tuesday around 2:30 PM. The 40 by 60 foot structure held 25 tons of hay, six tons of straw, and farm machinery. Origin unclear, sparks from hedge work may have started the blaze. insurance was reported.
Emert Allison a 21 year old son of Mr and Mrs Charles Allison of near Albia was instantly killed Saturday morning when a shale pile at the old Riverville mine caved in Two miles from Albia the shale on the Allison farm had been contracted by the city of Albia for a shale project on West Benton Allison had agreed to load material into trucks and was aiding in the work as workmen tunneled under the pile witnesses say Mr Allison had come to Albia to get dynamite to loosen heavy material.
Emert Allison, a young laborer, died in a tunnel collapse when a slide of slabs trapped him during an ER rand shift. Fellow workers rescued him but he had suffered fatal head injuries and other facial wounds. Two years prior he lost a hand in a hunting accident.
Cornelius Vanderbilt Jr. spent an hour Saturday evening at the W. L. Etter home in Sigourney conducting a political survey of twenty eight states. He was accompanied by his secretary and chauffeur. Vanderbilt formerly lived in New York and now runs a dude ranch in Nevada.
Glen Strasser of Gibson nearly died last Monday from car exhaust in a garage while his car idled to warm up. W A Soults found him on the floor, dragged him outside, and doctors revived him with oxygen. He is recovering nicely now.
