Car goes over bank in Baxter injuring two youths
Donald Perry of Baxter suffered severe cuts and bruises when the car carrying him and Leo Cross of Baxter went over a twenty foot bank at the Will Allen corner on the Baxter Ira road shortly before noon Tuesday. Cross escaped unhurt and Perry was thrown through the top of the coupe. the car owned by August Kracht was demolished.

Woman Brutally Murdered in Bethany Home
Mrs. Elizabeth Morrow of Bethany Missouri was killed in her residence north of town. The body was discovered bound and frozen sixty four hours after the crime, robbers suspected as two assailants ransacked lower rooms seeking valuables. The victim, cousin of Mrs. Mary Culbertson of Knoxville and J R Morris of Tracy, had visited Knoxville and Tracy several times.

Robbery at Oskaloosa Bus Depot Totals Over $300
Two unmasked men held up the Interstate Transit Lines and Jackson Transportation depot at 122 south First street just before 7 am. They covered depot agent C. D. Hackley with a gun, forced him to the rear and slugged him, taking $248.90 from the safe plus Hackley’s own loss of $50 to $60, as police were alerted immediately.

A noon Sunday fire leveled a brooder house owned by Ram Seayer Hatcheries at Pulaski. Neighbors failed to save the building, losing 150 chickens, feed, and two brooder stoves. The blaze, separated from other structures, was confined to the brooder house. insurance covered part of the loss.

Kerosene blast kills mother and baby near Chariton
A kerosene explosion at the Earl Bell home three miles west of Chariton on Tuesday killed Mrs Bell, 28, and her nine month old daughter Dorothy Mae. The cause of the blast could not be learned. Bell was in the barn at the time.

At the time of a house explosion Bell rushed inside thrice to save Dorothy May as smoke and heat barred the way. He brought her out, but his wife Mrs. Bell collapsed shortly after and died at Chariton hospital, with their daughter pronounced dead an hour later. The blast wrecked the room and caused extensive fire damage to the dwelling.

Revive Coal Mine Industry With New Mine at What Cheer
Twenty acres of the Dr Baughman farm near What Cheer were leased by George Phillips of Oskaloosa to open a strip coal mine. A good coal vein lies 20 to 30 feet deep and of good quality. Machinery will be used to uncover coal and build a road to the main road for trucks. Full operation not expected until next fall to serve early winter trade. The tract was left undeveloped years ago when What Cheer was a legend.
