How to Make Better Pastures in Iowa Farms
A Iowa State College study by C W McDonald and J M Scholl shows renovated pastures with a birdsfoot trefoil and orchardgrass mix carried over six ewes per acre for a five month grazing period, outperforming unimproved and other mixes. The Grun dy-Shelby Experimental Farm trial in Ringgold County compared mixtures including lespedza, clovers, bromegrass, and orchardgrass with phosphate and lime treatments, and found the trefoil orchardgrass blend most productive for early growth and forage yield.
