Public employees are said to receive the same occupational deferment as private workers under the Selective Service System. Charles J. Grohl, a lute director, explains deferment depends on job necessity and usefulness to the community or nation. He notes that group exemptions for local public employees are illegal and that local boards may defer those deemed necessary in productive civic roles.

Deferment Rules Emphasize Individual Review by Boards
Director Grahl stressed that deferments must be decided on an individual basis and that Selective Service aims to minimize economic disruption. He urged employers to assess key workers 21 to 86, estimate likely trainees by applying a 6 percent filter, and warned against preemptive pleas for deferment. Local boards will classify registrants by order numbers, with opportunities to substantiate deferment claims when training time arrives.
