Fire destroys De Cook barn near Fifield in late February
Friday's calm morning yielded farm pictures as residents reported a devastating early morning fire at John A. De Cook's home west of the city on the gravel toward Fifield. The 30 by 54 foot structure burned shortly after 1:30 AM with no clues to the cause. Neighbor Harry Tusseling discovered smoke from Highway 163, alerted the De Cooks by horn and knocking, and helped wake them.
