Role of weekly newspaper publisher in community power
A State University of Iowa thesis reports Ernest F. Larkin surveyed 20 eastern Iowa community leaders to gauge the local weekly publisher’s influence. Findings show the publisher is a top-level leader active in groups and planning, essential to large projects, yet viewed as more aggressive and less fair than the community’s ideal. The study notes readers favor news and publicity over editorials for garnering support, and that the publisher’s influence increases project success when backing is present. The research cautions it reflects a single community but suggests further studies.
