Iowans Now Contour 20 Times As Big Area as 10 Years Ago
A Iowa State College extension engineer notes the state has 20 times more contouring area than a decade ago and millions more acres need contouring. Contouring cuts runoff by 50 to 80 percent, adds moisture, and slows soil loss on slopes up to five percent. For steeper slopes, combine contouring with listed, strip cropping or terracing to protect waterways.

Study Finds Contouring Boosts Corn Yields on 260 Farms
A five year study by Iowa State College specialists on 260 Towa farms shows contour farming around hills raises yields. Corn up about 7.3 bushels per acre, soybeans 2.7, with water access and soil type affecting the gains. Permeable soils see larger increases. poorly drained levels may worsen drainage. Two men can lay out contour fields using a leveling instrument and stakes. Contouring is less practical on very irregular topography where hay or pasture is preferred.
