Rev Gradus Aalberts missionary to the Indians at Winnebago Nebraska will address the Iowa Christian Endeavor convention in Douwstra Chapel Central College on June 12 at 2 00 pm He will discuss the Rock for the Soul based on Psalm 31 3 The evangelistic event includes a silent prayer and a movie Second Chance The convention opens June 10 11 12 with a banquet at First Reformed Church of Pella and meetings led by local pastors and C E officers All are invited no admission Officials will be in Central College Student Union and organizers hope for wide participation

Band to Present First Concert of Season Saturday

The first in a series of Saturday evening band concerts will be held in Garden Square Saturday at 8:00 p.m. under director Fred Whalley. The program features The Appalachian Suite by Kinyon, Deep River Suite, a medley of Negro songs, Coronado overture, and selections including Sweet Adeline and Colonel Bogey among others.

Ottumwa Jr Legion defeated Pella 6 to 3 Thursday evening. Ottumwa pitcher Luke struck out 8 and walked 1 while giving up 4 hits. Pella pitcher Boyert allowed 5 hits with 8 strikeouts and 2 walks. Gill and Terrell led the visitors with a homer and a double. Van Rees Wallace Muyskens and Boyert added Pella singles. Score by innings shows Ottumwa leading 2 3 1 0 0 0 and Pella 0 0 3 0 0 0. game ended after 6th due to darkness.

Kiwanis Win Opener In Midget League

Kiwanis defeated Kersbergen 19 to 18 in opening round play at Pool Park Friday evening. Kiwanis exploded for 15 runs in the first inning, Kersbergen answered with 8 in the second, and both teams added runs through the game as pitchers Jim Vande Lune and Allen Andreas fanned eight and walked 11 for Kersbergen, while Douglas Vander Werf and Quentin Kuyper fanned seven and walked seven for Kiwanis.

Rotary Whipped Amvets in Opener

Rotary defeated Amvets 17 to 3 to stay tied with Kiwanis for the Midget League lead. Rotary had 10 hits, Amvets 6 with 2 errors. Pitching: Amvets Arnold Intfeld Ed Schakel and Marvin Hiemstra. Rotary Jerry Breen David Kuyper and Larry Haverkamp. Hiemstra led Amvets with 2 singles. Tysseling led Rotary with a triple and 2 singles. Next week’s schedule lists several league games and the New Sharon Midget schedule upcoming events.

Pella Opens Municipal Pool for Summer Season

The Pella pool starts its 11 week season on Thursday June 9 with opening day festivities. Staff includes Edgar Van Arkel in charge of the check room, Mrs. Gerrit De Wild matron, William Van Hal custodian, guards Patsy Schreiner Kenneth De Wild Greta Van Hemert and Carol Ver Steeg. Season tickets priced 4 dollars for adults and 2.60 for children are on sale at the City Office Carpenter's Drug Store and via Legion Auxiliary ticket sellers Mrs Murray Rinehart and Mrs Dora Carson.

Peter Swank of Otley Dead in Welding Tank Blast

Peter J. Swank of Otley was fatally injured when a tank he was welding on exploded. The 35 year old miner died from a skull fracture caused by flying metal. Funeral services were planned at the Second Christian Reformed Church of Pella on Thursday June 9 at 2:00 p.m. Burial followed at Oakwood Cemetery.

Rotarians Hear Kempkes Describe Holland Visit

Kempkes told Rotarians about his trip to Holland as chair of the World Service Committee of the Reformed Churches of America. He outlined screening for refugees under the 1953 Congressional Act, noting criteria like family, schooling, trade, religion, loyalty, and civil records. He said many refugees from Europe burden the U S and described talks with Dutch officials and press. twelve commissioners in Europe conducted the mission. Also noted were a midget baseball report, a June 28 Country Club picnic on Ladies Night, and birthday tables for the Kuypers.

Enrollment in Reformed Church Colleges to Rise

The General Synod of the Reformed Church in America approved a revised Liturgy for referendum to the 49 Classes. If approved, the revision becomes effective at the next General Synod. The synod also approved continued work among Dutch immigrants to Canada and named Rev. Jacob Blaauw of Grand Rapids as director of that effort. The Church has established twenty churches.

Leighton Vacations Bible School Closes Friday

Pella teachers contributed 160 dollars toward the Salisbury House project to benefit the Iowa State Education Association, directed at purchasing the former Weeks Mansion in Des Moines for the association. Dora J Bootsma Honored In Book Of Memories In Des Moines

Dora J Bootsma who taught forty five years in Pella schools has her name inscribed in the Book of Memories as a memorial tribute at Salisbury House Des Moines. The entry comes with a gift to the Iowa State Teachers Association for the headquarters building funded by C C Buerkens. Bootsma now resides at Hill Nursing Home Oskaloosa and remains in reasonably good health with many friends in Pella and beyond.
