A local Christian citizens league plans a nonsectarian Fourth of July event at West Market to foster Christian citizenship and keep youths in Pella. The executive committee seeks Christian statesmen to enlighten attendees and aims for an annual, well-ordered celebration with proper amusement and patriotic duties.
Lena Diehl of Melbourne leaped into a cistern at her son Harvey Diehl’s home on May 24, ending her life. The Newton era resident, born Lena Wilsterman in 1875, married Charles Diehl in 1895 and lived in Baxter, Lake City, Paton, Turner, Newton and Melbourne. Funeral services were held May 26 at St. John's Reformed church. she is survived by her son Charles and brother Henry Wilsterman, both of Melbourne.
A sheriff auction is set for July 10 1983 at the south door of Knoxville Court House Marion County Iowa. At the Pella Chamber of Commerce meeting in Legion Memorial hall, merchants debated paying above market prices to keep business local. John Lasschuit and others urged the Knoxville plan, suggesting temporary losses to establish long term relations, with a Wednesday night open store policy to boost crowds. A committee was formed to study paying more for produce and to implement the plan.
