Vivian Marie Davis, three fourths of a mile west of the Rock Island passenger station in Grinnell, was killed Thursday afternoon while playing on the railroad track with her dog. Her mother was away, leaving the child with her invalid father.
A baby escaped a house and ran onto a railroad track where a long freight train struck her. The dog accompanying the child died instantly. The infant was taken to Community Hospital and died about an hour later. The mother, unaware of the tragedy, returned home hoping for her own baby. Farmers urged to attend a field day Monday June 19 at the Federal Erosion Experiment Station in Bethany Missouri. District Soils Agent Lester E Clapp says the event will show erosion control, soil management, cropping systems, fertilization, ditch and gully control, and other practices to help Southern Iowa style erosion problems.
The program starts at 10 a m with short talks by soils authorities then a guided tour of a 220 acre farm packed with experiments. Bethany is reached via Leon and Lamont on Federal Highway 69, and the farm lies west of Bethany on Highway 4 about seven miles. Those interested should contact the Farm Bureau office to coordinate county group attendance.
