Divided Lugt Era Guides Reformed Church Plans and Budgets
The Synod reviewed a steady church program led by retiring president Dr. Gerrit Van der Lugt of Pella Iowa. It reported three percent growth in communicants and four percent in Sunday School, with home and mission spending totaling $15.87 million. The church proposed a $2.5 million benevolent budget plus $1.5 million for capital structure and urged links to the international Reformed alliance, a liturgy revision, and a Department of Stewardship. A Sabbatical policy for professors was adopted and a Stewardship Council was created chaired by A A Dykstra. The Synod kept memberships in the National Council of Churches and World Council of Churches and urged stronger arms control. A $75,000 Church World Service program would aid Korea and other regions, with relocation studies favoring Morning side Heights New York City and a midwest regional office in Chicago.
