Haying On The Farm Pictures In Round Bales And More
Around the country and in Pella area farms last week featured alfalfa baling. Elmer Rietveld Ray Meulpolder Delos Vanden Berg, and Albert Pleima and Quentin Zylstra baled in ten acres and on nearby fields, with Pleima and Zylstra praising round bales for rain protection and quicker handling. Rempe and neighbors shared a new baler, showcasing cooperative farming. Crops look good with green oats, flourishing clover and alfalfa, strong corn stands, and minimal weed infestation. Roadside scenery described as never looking better.

Liquid Fertilizers Reach Iowa Markets This Year
Farmers in about a third of the state will gain access to complete liquid mixed fertilizers this year with broader use possible within a few years. Iowa State College agronomist Joe Stritzel notes these liquids provide ratios of nitrogen, phosphate and potash for soil application, fed through tanks and spray equipment. Advantages include easier handling and compatibility with existing sprayers, while downsides cover spray corrosion from residues and crystallization below freezing that can clog equipment and hinder over winter storage.

New Method for Checking Corn Borers in Marion County
Dale M. Studt County Extension Director says start checking corn for corn borers now. A new method watches for leaf feeding visible as round shot holes in leaves. Large corn likely shows feeding this week. State College suggests spraying with 1 1/8 of DDT per acre once 75 percent show feeding. A recent Bill Dennison farm check found 24 egg masses per 100 plants on 28 inch tall corn, likely to hatch in about five days if warm weather continues and feeding appears a day or two after.

Liquid fertilizers praised for versatility and cautions
Zel notes liquid mixed fertilizers can match dry materials in effectiveness when applied similarly with comparable nutrient pounds and ratios. They offer broad uses from hill and row fertilization to oat legume seedings, but must be diluted or applied at low rates to avoid plant damage. Stritzel urges caution and discourages use on growing plants until more is learned.
